My relationship with CBD (Cannabidiol) oil started in Spring of 2017, long before "CBD" became a pop buzzword, but probably a bit later to the health and wellness game than those on the very forefront. Always battling insomnia, on the recommendation of a friend who is also in the wellness industry, I purchased a bottle CBD oil and brought it on a trip hoping to catch some Zzzzzzs after a weekend of wedding festivities.

After a few nights of usage, I was definitely sleeping better, and I also noticed an overall heightened sense of well-being. I didn't feel as tightly wound, as anxious, and I just felt...good! Happy. At ease. I tend to run on the anxious side, and while I've done my best to manage it over the years, I was still experiencing social anxiety and general anxiety regularly. I wanted to keep using the CBD oil I purchased, but when I ran out, I found that it was just too cost prohibitive to continue usage - retailing at about $150/bottle. This at a time where the market wasn't yet saturated and the cost for a well-reputed CBD oil was high.

Fast forward to 2018 and medical and recreational marijuana are legal now in several U.S. states. The proliferation of cannabis consumption and (relative) acceptance of cannabis culture  has opened up the market, making both THC and CBD product lines more accessible AND more affordable for its users. But with any consumer health trend comes infinite content around it. And with that comes a lot of confusion - hence the purpose of this blog post. It was really important to me - as a CBD user - to break down the difference between CBD and THC. Because they really are quite different compounds, with THC-free CBD offering tremendous health benefits WITHOUT any sort of psychoactive high whatsoever (CBD with psychoactive THC is also available quite prolifically).

I think that's what's most important to stress here, that you can - and should - consume CBD without experiencing a high. For most non-marijuana consumers, this is the primary concern. Cannabidiol—CBD—is a cannabis compound that has significant medical benefits, but does not make people feel “stoned” and can actually counteract the psychoactivity of THC. While THC is the principal psychoactive component of Cannabis and has certain medical uses, CBD stands out because it is both non-psychoactive and displays a broad range of potential medical applications. These properties make it especially attractive as a therapeutic agent.

The fact that CBD-rich cannabis is non-psychoactive or less psychoactive than THC-dominant strains makes it an appealing option for patients looking for relief from inflammation, pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures, spasms, and other conditions without disconcerting feelings of lethargy or dysphoria. This would explain the overall feeling of better wellness and lessening of anxiety that I experience with consistent use of CBD products. As someone who also needs to manage a chronic, inflammatory condition, the anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD are just an added benefit for myself and many other people with chronic pain and inflammation.

Once I started doing my homework and trying different products, I narrowed down to a few favorites below, which I selected based on quality of the source as well as just personal preference, and truth be told, liking and trusting the people behind the brands themselves.

RISE MORSELS:

Coming in at the top are Rise Morsels which come in two flavors, Caffe Mocha and Golden Turmeric.  Rise is a California based wellness company that produces cannabinoid rich morsels, making CBD consumption on the go a cinch. Rise morsels are convenient and precisely dosed bites formulated to deliver the combined benefits of active cannabinoids, elevating terpenes (fragrant oils that give cannabis its aromatic diversity), and exotic botanical ingredients. Each morsel contains 25mg of CBD, but they're scored so that you can dose in accordance with your needs. With a healthy dose of cacao, ginger, turmeric and coconut depending on the type of morsel, these on-the-go bites offer a double dose of beneficial compounds - cannabis AND superfoods - into your daily wellness routine. Use the code 'RH10' for 10% off site-wise at Rise.

STRAVA CRAFT COFFEE:

The people at Strava developed perhaps one of the most innovative ways to consume cannabis - your daily cup of joe. Strava's Peace & Wellness line of craft coffees with CBD is infused with full-spectrum hemp oil which is is non-psychoactive, rich in naturally occurring CBD, and is packed with Amino Acids, Vitamins B1, B2 and D, Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids. There are four types to choose from, each offering a different benefit and dosage of CBD, and each with a different flavor profile since Strava is a craft coffee company first and foremost. FOCUS enhances mental clarity. RESTORE offers a sense of peace and wellbeing. ELEVATE supports overall health. And ESCAPE is perfect for those - like me - who are looking to take the edge off a little. All of these options deliver relief from pain & inflammation, and you drink all of them just the way that you would any other cup off coffee!

NONNIE'S NECTAR:

Featured in the Reformation Health Healthy Holiday Gift Guide, Nonnie's Nectar is a brother-sister partnership started by Julie and Ryan Beers, who developed the Nonnie's Nectar product line for their Nonnie (grandmother). Coming in at 10mg each, their Gummy Bears are derived from pure hemp extract, and are an easy way to dose incrementally as needed. I love the Gummy Bears since they are convenient to transport and also taste slightly of terpenes which I like, but the entire product line of tinctures, salves and gel caps is excellent. If a CBD pen is your style, the Select CBD disposable quickly became my go-to on recommendation from a trusted friend at Civilized. I love the portability and rapid efficacy of the pen without any telltale fragrance, and 0% THC (although they offer a full line of products that DO include THC). Rapid efficiency being of most importance during moments of high anxiety.  Select CB Blends combine the medical benefits of CBD with essential oils and natural extracts for relaxation and focus. RELAX offers release at the end of a stressful day with sweet-smelling, calming lavender extract. FOCUS is formulated to provide the clarifying benefits of CBD combined with soothing, refreshing peppermint extract. REVIVE lifts you up with invigorating, rejuvenating grapefruit extract to help you recover, reconnect and regain energy. I tote the RELAX pen around at all times.
